Riding for a Cause in their Community

Terry & Vera Smyth, own and operate the TRU Hardware in Port Hardy, BC. Being involved in their community and giving back is something they enjoy doing as a couple.

In 2011 they participated in the 4th Annual Boomers Legacy Ride. They rode their bicycles 240km from Courtenay to Victoria, BC and raised over $4,000 through community donations. The proceeds are used to aid in the development of women and children in Afghanistan, a way to honor Canadian solders who have served there, and particularly those who have paid the ultimate price with their lives.

"Boomer's Legacy" is named in remembrance of Corporal Andrew James Eykelenboom, a Canadian military medic who was killed by a suicide bomber in Spin Boldak, Afghanistan in August 2006 at age 23. While serving in Afghanistan, Andrew (known to his friends as "Boomer") recognized numerous opportunities for assisting the Afghan people through the distribution of medical supplies, educational material, books and warm clothing. In small, personal ways, Boomer and his comrades felt they were able to make a special contribution to bringing peace and stability to Afghanistan. Boomer's Legacy has been created to further these accomplishments." From Boomers Legacy Ride Website: http://boomerslegacy.ca/info.htm
